A large part of the region is made up of protected areas. Parks and protected areas have a primary purpose of ecosystems and biodiversity conservation. The main tree species are beech, chestnut, silver fir, spruce, sycamore maple, wild cherry, rowan. In the undergrowth are common wild fruits such as strawberries, raspberries, blueberries while at high altitude cover entire sides; do not forget mushrooms present in these areas in many varieties.
CAMPOLINO NATURAL ORIENTED RESERVE
Located on the southern slope of Sestaione high valley, covers approximately 100 hectares at an altitude between 1442 m of Greppo Lake and 1850 m of Campolino; was established in 1972 in order to safeguard the presence of indigenous populations of red fir (Picea abies). In the reserve there are some major natural wetlands (Greppo Lake and Lamacce) which host vegetation very special, full of its own species. The reserve Campolino is also indicated for birdwatching, you can in fact spot buzzards, woodpeckers and the majestic golden eagle. In the wild there are deer, fallow deer and red deer. The reserve can be visited only with the permission of the Forest Guard who, during the summer, organizes guided excursions.
BEECH BIOGENETIC NATURE ERESERVE OF PIAN DEGLI ONTANI
Represents one of the most beautiful forests in Pistoia mountains, well inside viable thanks to the numerous paths and a wide dirt road forest (used in winter as a cross-country skiing) that covers approximately 500 acres in the vicinity of Pian di Novello and Pian degli Ontani on the right bank of the river Sestaione at an altitude between 1100 and 1800 m. It was established in 1977 with the aim of preserving a habitat suitable for the growth of the beech for selected seeds production.
ABETONE BIOGENETIC NATURE RESERVE
Established in 1977 in order to preserve an ecosystem as possible suitable for the development of silver fir (Abies alba), the reserve covers 584 hectares in Abetone municipality, in the upper basin of River Lima and in a part of Sestaione between 1561 m and 1200 m of Mount Maiore near Pian di Novello. Access to the reserve is free and optimally viable inside.
NATURAL PLACES RESERVE “ORRIDO DI BOTRI”
In Val Fegana there is one of the most beautiful and picturesque canyons in Italy where the Golden Eagle nests. And one of the most challenging trips that requires adequate preparation, and involves overcoming various waterfalls. This reserve is located in the province of Lucca, but you can reach in 8/9 hours starting from Sestaione.
